In today’s America, a burglary occurs every 10 seconds. Here’s how to protect your business.
It’s no secret, crime is up across the country.
According to a recently released report from the FBI, there has been a continued rise in homicides since the end of summer, up 53% from the same period last year.
Additionally, arsonists are lighting fire to property 19% more than last year as well – 52% of this increase coming in cities with more than 1 million people.
The increase in crime is the real pandemic.
And what are we left with when our politicians are debating on whether or not to continue funding the police? As small business owners, are we supposed to stand guard at all hours of the day and night carrying pitchforks? We must protect our own livelihood.
Until recently, we believed New York City, especially downtown Manhattan, was among the safest metropolitan thoroughfares in the world. We pride ourselves on community, diversity, and the Men in Blue.
Just last week I was happily strolling through the streets of Lower Manhattan on a beautiful Fall morning on the way to my girlfriend’s apartment when I noticed police blocking her street. The night before, a group of hooligans had smashed 7 consecutive storefronts on Worth Street between Church and Broadway… Yes, my girlfriend’s exact block!
With no clear goal in mind other than to cause havoc, windows were broken and stores ransacked; a restaurant, a hair salon, a boutique fitness studio, a costume jewelry store, a pet supply store, and an art gallery… all with damaged windows if not robbed all together.
Worth noting, this has historically been a VERY safe neighborhood. One of the most expensive zip codes in the country and just blocks from the World Trade Center. Yet surprisingly, when I spoke to my girlfriend that morning, she did not report hearing any alarms. For a very light sleeper on the 4th floor to have heard nothing, this can mean only one thing… no security systems went off.
Every TEN seconds a burglary occurs in America. This amounts to over $4,000,000 in damages EVERY DAY.
According to a comprehensive study conducted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, 83% of burglars said they look for an alarm before attempting a burglary, and 60% say they would move on if there was a security system in place.
These days, technology is so advanced that your alarm system going off can also alert your phone so you will still get an immediate alert or notification of the tripped alarm when not nearby. For a business owner, this is crucial. The ability to know you are protected at all hours of the day provides the ultimate peace of mind.
You don’t even have to have a high-tech museum quality alarm system. Just a basic security system with cameras is more than worth protecting the investment you’ve made in your business and something even more valuable, peace of mind.
If you were to be victim of a burglary, not only will structural damage likely occur, but without a security system in place, your hard earned success is at risk. Insurance may cover some level of damages but potentially being out of business for weeks or months due to a lack of protective measures could very possibly be avoided.
On the other hand, some insurance companies offer lower rates when a business security system is in place. These days, we have to be prepared by taking extra precautions into our own hands.
